Bluefish vs Zscaler
A source-aware comparison of pricing, documented capabilities and workflow fit.
Short answer
- Price: not directly comparable — Bluefish is free, Zscaler is custom pricing — quote required.
- How to start: Bluefish is free, Zscaler is custom pricing — quote required.
- Where they differ: only Bluefish has open source / self-hostable and only Zscaler has public api, mobile app and sso (saml).

What Bluefish is
Bluefish is a volunteer-maintained, GPL-licensed graphical editor for web developers and programmers. It provides syntax-aware editing, projects, regex search, snippets, external-tool integration and optional remote-file access across desktop operating systems. It is an editor rather than a complete IDE or hosted collaboration service, and some features depend on optional libraries or have reduced availability in native Windows and macOS packages.
What Zscaler is
Zscaler is a proprietary cloud security platform. Zscaler Internet Access inspects and controls user traffic to internet and SaaS destinations, while Zscaler Private Access brokers identity- and policy-based access to private applications without placing users on the application network. Current platform bundles and standalone products are quote based; entitlements differ by user count, edition, add-ons, App Connectors, application segments, isolation traffic, branch throughput or endpoints and specialized workloads. ZIA and ZPA solve different traffic paths and should not be treated as one universal VPN replacement license.

What Bluefish is built to do
- Syntax-aware editor
- Provides highlighting, folding, matching markers and completion for many markup and programming languages.
- Projects and many files
- Restores project settings and supports large multi-document editing sessions.
- Search and automation
- Combines PCRE search-and-replace, snippets, external commands and text filters.
- Remote files
- Uses GVfs for protocols such as SFTP and WebDAV where the platform package supports it.
What Zscaler is built to do
- Zscaler Internet Access
- Applies secure-web, firewall, threat and data policies to internet and SaaS traffic.
- Zscaler Private Access
- Connects authorized users to private applications through App Connectors and policy, not general network admission.
- Client and branch forwarding
- Routes supported endpoint, branch and workload traffic to the appropriate Zscaler service.
- Identity and API controls
- Uses SAML and administrative APIs for contextual policy and lifecycle automation.
Choose Bluefish if
- Editing HTML, CSS, scripts and mixed-language web files
- Large batches of text files needing regex operations and snippets
- Desktop workflows that prefer external build, lint and deployment tools
Skip Bluefish if
- You require an integrated debugger, language server or full project toolchain
- Your workflow depends on identical remote-file features across every operating system
- You need managed collaboration, cloud workspaces or organizational identity controls
Choose Zscaler if
- Distributed workforces needing consistent internet and SaaS inspection
- Private applications that can be segmented and published through redundant connectors
- Enterprises able to pilot traffic, identity, certificate inspection, logs and business continuity by region
Skip Zscaler if
- A small team needs a simple commodity VPN without enterprise policy infrastructure
- Applications require unsupported protocols or broad layer-3 network access not covered by the chosen package
- The project has not budgeted deployment services, add-ons, log pipelines and connector infrastructure

Bluefish: pros & cons
- Lightweight editing: The project emphasizes fast startup and handling many open files.
- Broad syntax coverage: Included definitions cover more than 30 markup and programming languages.
- Power-user tools: Regex replacement, snippets, external commands, filters, folding and completion support repetitive editing work.
- Current maintenance: The official site lists Bluefish 2.4.2 released in July 2026.
- Not a full IDE: Integrated debugging, language servers, dependency management and application-specific tooling are not its core scope.
- Platform differences: Remote files, site transfer and Emmet support can be unavailable or limited in native Windows and macOS packages.
- Optional dependencies: Spell checking, character maps and Emmet require additional build or runtime components.
- Volunteer support model: Adoption should account for community support capacity and the project's release cadence.
Zscaler: pros & cons
- Direct-to-cloud security: Internet controls can follow users without backhauling every session through a corporate perimeter.
- Application-level private access: ZPA policies can grant access to named applications rather than broad network reach.
- Identity integration: SAML attributes and multiple identity-provider options support contextual user policy.
- Administration APIs: Product APIs support automation for application segments, connectors, policy and tenant resources.
- No public transactional price: User mix, bundle, geography, traffic and add-ons require a negotiated design and quote.
- Deployment is not agent-only: Traffic forwarding, Client Connector, App Connectors, DNS, identity, certificates and logging need coordinated rollout.
- Entitlements have ceilings: Bundles can cap connectors, segments, isolation traffic or included privileged-access systems.
- Service availability is not application availability: Identity, endpoint, network, connector and target application failures remain outside the cloud service itself.
Our verdict on Bluefish
Choose Bluefish as a focused source editor when its supported package and optional dependencies match the workstation; evaluate it alongside—not as a replacement for—required debugging, build, version-control and collaboration tools.
Our verdict on Zscaler
Zscaler can materially reduce broad network trust, but it is an architecture and migration program rather than a drop-in proxy; separate ZIA and ZPA requirements, inventory every entitlement and traffic path, then test identity, inspection, connector loss and emergency access before rollout.
