Viber vs Wire

A source-aware comparison of pricing, documented capabilities and workflow fit.

Short answer

These lines are generated from the pricing we track, not from a paid placement. How we score tools.

What Viber is

Rakuten Viber is a phone-number-based consumer messaging and calling service for mobile, desktop and tablet. Core app-to-app messaging and calling are free, while Viber Out uses purchased credit or automatically renewing monthly plans to call ordinary mobile and landline numbers. One-to-one chats, ordinary groups and one-to-one voice/video calls use end-to-end encryption on current clients. That protection does not extend to Communities, Channels, bot chats, group voice/video calls or paid Viber Out calls, which have different participant and delivery models. Viber also warns that Viber Out connectivity issues may occur in Turkey and several other countries.

What Wire is

Wire is a proprietary commercial service built on open-source clients and backend components for end-to-end encrypted messaging, calls, conferences and file sharing. Current pricing offers Wire for Free to teams of up to five, Wire for SMB at €7.45 per person per month billed annually (€8.94 monthly) for up to 100 people, and custom Enterprise/partner arrangements. SMB adds conferences up to 150 participants, SSO, SCIM, administrative policy and external/guest roles. Private-cloud and on-premises deployments add license, setup, implementation and customer-operated infrastructure; air-gapped use is available only through appropriately scoped deployments.

Choose Viber if

  • Everyday one-to-one or small-group messaging among Viber users
  • Communities and brands that accept the public or server-mediated channel model
  • Occasional phone-network calling after comparing the exact destination rate and connection quality

Skip Viber if

  • Every group call, broadcast, bot interaction and telephone call must be end-to-end encrypted
  • Enterprise SSO, managed identities, retention and compliance exports are required
  • Turkey-based Viber Out calling is business-critical without a tested fallback

Choose Wire if

  • Teams needing E2EE plus SSO and SCIM rather than a consumer messenger
  • Organizations collaborating with controlled guests and external partners
  • Sovereignty projects prepared to operate or fund private-cloud or on-premises infrastructure

Skip Wire if

  • More than five users need a permanently free managed team
  • The project assumes open source makes hosted operations free or automatically compliant
  • On-premises patching, monitoring, capacity, backups, federation and incident response lack an owner

Viber: pros & cons

  • Current clients apply end-to-end encryption automatically to one-to-one chats, ordinary groups and one-to-one calls.
  • Desktop and tablet companions extend a phone-number account across common devices.
  • Groups, Communities and Channels cover private conversation, large community and one-way broadcast patterns.
  • Viber Out provides a paid route to mobile and landline numbers that do not use Viber.
  • Communities, Channels, bots, group calls and Viber Out calls are not end-to-end encrypted.
  • Viber Out requires credit or a monthly auto-renewing plan, and country, destination and number-type exclusions apply.
  • The vendor specifically warns of possible Viber Out connectivity issues in Turkey.
  • Uninstalling, deactivating and cancelling paid plans are separate actions; deactivation can remove data or credit without cancelling a Viber Out subscription.

Wire: pros & cons

  • Messages, calls and files are end-to-end encrypted across supported multi-device clients.
  • SMB includes SSO, SCIM, administration and guest/external controls at a public per-user price.
  • Cloud, private-cloud and on-premises options address different sovereignty and operations needs.
  • Open-source code and MLS-based group security provide inspectable protocol and implementation surfaces.
  • The free plan is capped at five team members and excludes multi-party conference initiation, SSO and policy controls.
  • Private-cloud and on-premises total cost includes licenses, setup, implementation, infrastructure and ongoing customer maintenance.
  • Federation, ID Shield, multi-tenancy and certain sovereignty features are Enterprise rather than SMB entitlements.
  • APIs and SDK custom functionality is not fully supported as a standard deployment path and requires vendor scoping.

Our verdict on Viber

Viber is a capable consumer messenger where its network is already present, but its encryption claim has boundaries. Distinguish ordinary encrypted chats from Communities, Channels, bots, group calls and Viber Out, and never rely on a paid calling plan until the destination rate, renewal and local connectivity are tested.

Our verdict on Wire

Wire combines real E2EE with useful enterprise identity and deployment choices. The public SMB price is competitive, but sovereignty is an operations project: verify MLS migration, device lifecycle, guests, SSO/SCIM and exports, and price the full private-cloud or on-premises service before signing.
