DBeaver

Universal database client.

What it is

DBeaver is a database client that connects to practically every engine, with a free community edition and a paid enterprise version. One window handles PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, Oracle, SQL Server and, in the paid tier, document and cloud stores — which matters when a single project spans several databases. Because it is a Java desktop application it runs identically on Windows, macOS and Linux, and the community edition is a genuine product rather than a limited trial. Who it is for: developers, analysts and DBAs who touch more than one database engine in a week and do not want a separate client for each. The Community edition is open source under the Apache 2 licence and covers the relational engines most teams run; the paid Lite, Enterprise and Ultimate editions add NoSQL and cloud sources such as MongoDB, Cassandra, Redis and the big-cloud data warehouses, plus schema compare and analytics features. Where it falls short: the interface is built on Eclipse, so it feels heavier and less polished than native clients like TablePlus or DataGrip, and startup time on a laptop is noticeable. Very large result sets are paged rather than streamed, which is safe but slow for ad-hoc exports. If you only ever use PostgreSQL, pgAdmin or a lighter client may be enough; DBeaver earns its place the moment a second engine appears.

Strengths and trade-offs

What works well

  • Connects to almost any database
  • Free community edition is genuinely capable
  • Runs on all major platforms

Where it falls short

  • Java-based interface feels heavy
  • Dense UI with a learning curve
  • Some drivers need manual setup

Who it is for

Anyone who works across more than one kind of database.

Pick it or skip it

Pick DBeaver if

  • Working across SQL, NoSQL and cloud databases from one desktop client without a licence
  • Teams that want a client they can install on every developer machine at no cost
  • Occasional database work where a heavy Java desktop app is an acceptable trade

Skip it if

  • You want the AI SQL assistant, ERD edit mode or mock data generation — the vendor lists these as PRO features, and PRO starts at $113/year
  • You need SSO and enterprise authentication, which are not part of the free Community edition
  • You want a lightweight client; the Java-based interface is heavy and the UI is dense

Our verdict

The tool that covers everything. Single-database users often prefer a lighter native client.
