Neovim is a modernised Vim: same modal editing, but with an embedded Lua runtime, an async plugin model and a language-server client built in. It runs in a terminal, starts instantly and is configured entirely in text, which is why it survives on remote servers where a graphical editor cannot go. The cost is that you assemble your own environment; nothing is set up for you.
