Snyk

Finds vulnerabilities in code and dependencies.

What it is

Snyk scans code, dependencies, containers and infrastructure definitions for known vulnerabilities, and integrates into pull requests so problems surface before merge. Catching a vulnerable dependency in the pull request is much cheaper than finding it in production, and the fix advice is usually a version bump it can open for you. The known cost is noise: without tuning, low-severity findings can drown the ones that matter.

Key features

  • Dependency scanning

Flags known vulnerabilities in direct and transitive dependencies.

  • Pull-request checks

Blocks or comments on merges that introduce known issues.

  • Container and IaC scanning

Checks images and infrastructure definitions for misconfiguration.

Strengths and trade-offs

What works well

  • Catches vulnerable dependencies early in the workflow
  • Covers code, containers and IaC in one tool
  • Fix suggestions rather than only warnings

Where it falls short

  • False positives need triage time
  • Pricing scales quickly with contributors
  • Some fixes require major version upgrades

Who it is for

Teams that need dependency and container security checks inside their existing pipeline.

Pick it or skip it

Pick Snyk if

  • Individual developers and tiny teams — the Free plan gives 200 open-source, 100 code, 100 container and 300 IaC tests a month across 5 projects
  • Teams that want SCA, SAST, container and IaC scanning in IDE and CLI from one vendor
  • Small companies that can pay $25 per contributing developer per month for 1,000 tests and 100 projects

Skip it if

  • You have more than 5 projects or exhaust the monthly test quotas on Free
  • Your team is large: Snyk counts every developer who committed to monitored private repos in 90 days
  • You need unlimited tests and custom rules: Ignite starts at $1,260/year per developer

Our verdict

Worth it if nobody currently owns dependency security. Budget time for tuning, or the alerts become noise people ignore.
