Skype vs WeChat
A source-aware comparison of pricing, documented capabilities and workflow fit.

These lines are generated from the pricing we track, not from a paid placement. How we score tools.
What Skype is
Skype was Microsoft's consumer internet calling, video meeting and messaging service. It is no longer an active product choice: Microsoft retired free and paid Skype on May 5, 2025 and stopped selling paid Skype features to new customers. The replacement path was Microsoft Teams Free using Skype credentials, with eligible contacts and chats transferred. The final Skype Export Portal request deadline was June 15, 2026, and Microsoft warned that deletion of older inactive history began April 1, 2026. Skype for Business was explicitly outside this consumer retirement announcement and must be assessed separately.
What WeChat is
WeChat is Tencent's international mobile messaging and social platform, combining chats, voice/video calls, Moments, Official Accounts, Mini Programs and region-dependent payments or phone calling. It is not simply another name for Weixin: Tencent describes WeChat and mainland-China-focused Weixin as separate but interoperable sister services, with different target users and policy documents. Availability of Wallet, Weixin Pay, Mini Programs, games and WeChat Out varies by region. The official sources reviewed for this record do not establish default end-to-end encryption for WeChat conversations, so the service should not be presented as an E2EE messenger without stronger product-specific evidence.

Choose Skype if
- Historical product comparisons
- Auditing whether a former Skype account was migrated to Teams Free
- Documenting legacy calling subscriptions or number-porting follow-up
Skip Skype if
- You are choosing a current consumer messaging or meeting platform
- You expect to create a new Skype paid account, Credit balance or calling subscription
- You assume old Skype history is still exportable after the published deadline
Choose WeChat if
- Maintaining personal or commercial relationships where WeChat/Weixin is already the expected network
- Region-supported customer journeys using Official Accounts or Mini Programs
- Travel and cross-border contexts after confirming account, payment and local-feature eligibility
Skip WeChat if
- Default end-to-end encryption is a mandatory communications requirement
- Enterprise SSO, centralized retention, e-discovery and managed identities are required
- The service design assumes WeChat and Weixin have identical terms, payments, data handling and feature availability

Skype: pros & cons
- The historical service combined chat, voice, video and phone-network calling under a widely recognized identity.
- Microsoft provided a Teams Free migration path using existing Skype credentials.
- Remaining paid users were given Dial Pad access through the Skype web portal and Teams Free during transition.
- A documented export process existed before the final 2026 deadline.
- Consumer Skype has been retired since May 5, 2025 and cannot be selected for a new deployment.
- Paid Skype Credit, calling subscriptions and Skype Numbers are no longer sold to new customers.
- The June 15, 2026 export-request deadline has passed; unavailable or deleted history cannot be assumed recoverable.
- The retirement notice does not cover Skype for Business, so the two products must not be conflated.
WeChat: pros & cons
- Messaging, calls, social posts, official content and embedded services coexist in one widely used network.
- Mini Programs let merchants and institutions deliver services without a separate app installation.
- Official Accounts, QR discovery and payment capabilities can connect content, service and commerce in supported regions.
- Interoperability with Weixin provides reach into a distinct mainland-China-centered ecosystem.
- WeChat and Weixin use distinct service and privacy frameworks; account location and migration can change applicable terms and features.
- Payments, Wallet, Mini Programs, games and phone-network calling are region- and eligibility-dependent.
- Official product materials reviewed here do not prove default end-to-end encryption for chats or calls.
- Mini Programs and Official Accounts introduce third-party operators, permissions, data processing and payment relationships beyond Tencent's core app.
Our verdict on Skype
Skype is retired and should be excluded from every new-product shortlist. Former users should inspect Teams Free and carrier records for what survived, but the official Skype export window has already closed and recovery must not be promised.
Our verdict on WeChat
WeChat's advantage is its network and embedded-service ecosystem, not a universally identical global feature set. Confirm whether each participant is governed by WeChat or Weixin, map third-party Mini Program and payment data flows, and choose another channel when independently verifiable E2EE or enterprise controls are mandatory.
