What Telegram is
Telegram is a cloud-based messaging platform spanning mobile, desktop and web clients. Free users can synchronize cloud chats across devices, exchange files, create groups with up to 200,000 members and broadcast through channels with unlimited audiences. Telegram Premium is an optional, locally priced subscription that raises limits and adds 4 GB uploads, faster downloads, transcription, translation and other convenience features. Security depends on chat type: ordinary private chats, groups, channels and bot conversations are server-client encrypted cloud chats stored on Telegram's servers; only device-specific one-to-one Secret Chats add end-to-end encryption and are not synchronized to other devices.
What Threema is
Threema is a Swiss secure-messaging family rather than one subscription. Threema Private is a consumer mobile app that can be purchased directly for Android for a current one-time price of $7.49, €6.49 or CHF 5.99 and can create an identity without supplying a phone number or email. Threema Work adds annual per-user licensing, a management cockpit, app configuration, optional Broadcast and Gateway components, and a 30-day trial for up to 30 users. Threema Gateway is a separate credit-based API integration. Apps are open source and communications use end-to-end plus transport encryption, but server code and the operating environment are separate trust and audit scopes.

Choose Telegram if
- Large public or private communities needing granular administrators and searchable shared history
- Creators broadcasting through channels
- Developers building bots or Mini Apps under Telegram's API and data-use terms
Skip Telegram if
- Every conversation and group must use end-to-end encryption by default
- Enterprise SSO, centralized retention, e-discovery and administrator-managed accounts are mandatory
- The organization cannot govern third-party bots, public content, moderation and phone-number account recovery
Choose Threema if
- Individuals wanting a paid messenger without mandatory phone-number identity
- Organizations centrally configuring encrypted mobile communication through Threema Work
- Systems sending transactional Threema messages through a deliberately selected Gateway encryption mode
Skip Threema if
- A free consumer messenger with a large existing contact network is the priority
- Enterprise selection is based on the consumer one-time price

Telegram: pros & cons
- Large groups, broadcast channels and cross-device cloud history support community-scale communication.
- Bot API, MTProto API and Mini Apps enable deep automation and embedded services.
- Official client source and verifiable mobile builds provide more inspection evidence than a fully closed client stack.
- Optional Premium expands upload and productivity limits without removing the free service.
- Cloud chats—including ordinary one-to-one chats and groups—are not end-to-end encrypted; Telegram stores them for synchronization.
- Secret Chats are one-to-one and device/session specific, so they do not provide cloud history, group coverage or seamless device migration.
- Bots run through third-party owner infrastructure and can process the messages or inputs users send them.
- Public groups and channels expose posted content broadly, while large-community moderation, impersonation, scams and retention remain operator responsibilities.
Threema: pros & cons
- Messages, calls and files use end-to-end encryption with keys tied to a randomly generated Threema ID.
- Consumer identity can be created without making a phone number or email mandatory.
- Open-source apps and published security material provide inspectable implementation evidence.
- Threema Work adds centralized configuration and deployment, while Gateway supports programmatic messages.
- Private, Work, Broadcast, Gateway and OnPrem have different licensing, administration and deployment boundaries.
- The $7.49 figure is a direct Android consumer license, not a Threema Work enterprise seat or iOS universal price.
- Work contracts are annual, prepaid and auto-renew unless cancelled at least 90 days before term end.
- Gateway Basic mode lets the server handle encryption and private keys; true E2E mode requires correct client-side key operations.
Our verdict on Telegram
Telegram is powerful community and automation infrastructure, but 'Telegram is end-to-end encrypted' is an inaccurate blanket claim. Use cloud chats for synchronized convenience, Secret Chats only for supported one-to-one sensitive conversations, and treat every bot or public community as a separate trust boundary.
Our verdict on Threema
Threema offers credible privacy-oriented messaging, but compare product and key-management modes precisely. The consumer app is inexpensive; Work, Broadcast, Gateway and OnPrem are operational systems. Pilot enrollment, recovery, offboarding and API keys, then document what administrators and servers can still observe.
