Skype vs Telegram

What Skype is

Skype was Microsoft's consumer internet calling, video meeting and messaging service. It is no longer an active product choice: Microsoft retired free and paid Skype on May 5, 2025 and stopped selling paid Skype features to new customers. The replacement path was Microsoft Teams Free using Skype credentials, with eligible contacts and chats transferred. The final Skype Export Portal request deadline was June 15, 2026, and Microsoft warned that deletion of older inactive history began April 1, 2026. Skype for Business was explicitly outside this consumer retirement announcement and must be assessed separately.

What Telegram is

Telegram is a cloud-based messaging platform spanning mobile, desktop and web clients. Free users can synchronize cloud chats across devices, exchange files, create groups with up to 200,000 members and broadcast through channels with unlimited audiences. Telegram Premium is an optional, locally priced subscription that raises limits and adds 4 GB uploads, faster downloads, transcription, translation and other convenience features. Security depends on chat type: ordinary private chats, groups, channels and bot conversations are server-client encrypted cloud chats stored on Telegram's servers; only device-specific one-to-one Secret Chats add end-to-end encryption and are not synchronized to other devices.

Retired messaging

Previously supported internet voice/video plus paid calls and numbers for the telephone network.

Teams migration

Microsoft directed consumers to Teams Free using their Skype sign-in.

Skip Skype if

• You assume old Skype history is still exportable after the published deadline

Choose Telegram if

• Large public or private communities needing granular administrators and searchable shared history
• Creators broadcasting through channels
• Developers building bots or Mini Apps under Telegram's API and data-use terms

Skip Telegram if

• Every conversation and group must use end-to-end encryption by default
• Enterprise SSO, centralized retention, e-discovery and administrator-managed accounts are mandatory
• The organization cannot govern third-party bots, public content, moderation and phone-number account recovery

Skype: pros & cons

• The historical service combined chat, voice, video and phone-network calling under a widely recognized identity.
• Microsoft provided a Teams Free migration path using existing Skype credentials.
• Remaining paid users were given Dial Pad access through the Skype web portal and Teams Free during transition.
• A documented export process existed before the final 2026 deadline.
• Consumer Skype has been retired since May 5, 2025 and cannot be selected for a new deployment.
• Paid Skype Credit, calling subscriptions and Skype Numbers are no longer sold to new customers.
• The June 15, 2026 export-request deadline has passed; unavailable or deleted history cannot be assumed recoverable.
• The retirement notice does not cover Skype for Business, so the two products must not be conflated.

Telegram: pros & cons

• Large groups, broadcast channels and cross-device cloud history support community-scale communication.
• Bot API, MTProto API and Mini Apps enable deep automation and embedded services.
• Official client source and verifiable mobile builds provide more inspection evidence than a fully closed client stack.
• Optional Premium expands upload and productivity limits without removing the free service.
• Cloud chats—including ordinary one-to-one chats and groups—are not end-to-end encrypted; Telegram stores them for synchronization.
• Secret Chats are one-to-one and device/session specific, so they do not provide cloud history, group coverage or seamless device migration.
• Bots run through third-party owner infrastructure and can process the messages or inputs users send them.
• Public groups and channels expose posted content broadly, while large-community moderation, impersonation, scams and retention remain operator responsibilities.
