What it is

GroupMe is Microsoft's free consumer group messaging service for iOS, Android, Windows and the web. It supports ordinary groups, direct messages, announcement groups and school communities through GroupMe Campus, with search, media, notifications and optional Copilot interactions. Microsoft does not charge for the service, but carrier SMS or data fees can apply. Users may sign in with a personal Microsoft account, yet this is not evidence of organization-managed Entra SSO or enterprise compliance controls. The official materials reviewed here do not claim end-to-end encryption for GroupMe chats, so sensitive regulated communication requires another evaluated channel.

  • Data export is web-only, JSON requires an external viewer, and only one export can be active at a time.

Our verdict

GroupMe remains useful free social coordination, but it is not a substitute for Teams or a governed secure messenger. Keep confidential work elsewhere, enable two-step verification and backup codes, govern Copilot mentions, and periodically export important group history from the web.
