SurveyMonkey

Self-service survey platform with free, team and enterprise tiers, response allowances and separately sold respondent panels.

What it is

SurveyMonkey creates and distributes surveys, forms and quizzes, then analyzes collected responses. The free Basic tier is constrained to 10 questions per survey; paid individual and team plans add question types, logic, exports and higher response allowances. The current US pricing page lists Team Advantage at $30 per user per month and Team Premier at $92 per user per month, both billed annually and starting with three users. Enterprise capabilities and pricing require a sales process. 'Unlimited surveys' is not unlimited data collection: annual or per-survey response rules, overage charges and separately purchased SurveyMonkey Audience responses still apply.

Key features

  • Survey authoring

Builds surveys, forms and quizzes with tier-dependent question types, logic and branding controls.

  • Collection and analysis

Distributes links or other collectors and provides tier-dependent exports, filters and analysis.

  • Team administration

Adds shared assets, seats and administrative controls, with enterprise identity options.

  • API access

OAuth 2.0 APIs expose surveys, collectors and responses subject to application and endpoint limits.

Strengths and trade-offs

What works well

  • Low-friction survey creation and multiple collection channels suit routine feedback workflows.
  • Paid tiers add skip logic, randomization, exports, collaboration and analysis without building survey infrastructure.
  • Enterprise options add centralized administration, SSO, regional hosting choices and selected governance controls.
  • OAuth-based APIs support authorized integration with survey and response data within application limits.

Where it falls short

  • The free tier's 10-question limit and restricted response access make it unsuitable for many formal studies.
  • Responses—including incomplete or later-deleted responses—can count toward allowances, and unused annual capacity does not roll over.
  • Team plans start at three seats; extra collaborators and response overages can create additional charges.
  • Audience panel responses are a separate purchase and do not remove the need to validate sampling quality and research design.

Who it is for

Individuals and organizations that need a hosted survey workflow and can size question, seat, response, analysis and governance requirements before purchase.

Our verdict

SurveyMonkey is a practical general-purpose survey service, but the purchase unit is not merely 'a survey': model seats, questions, annual responses, overage, exports and Audience recruitment separately, then test the exact collector and analysis workflow before committing.
